F1 and Le Tour de France Battle it Out

11/07/2011 5 comments

Those that read this blog are already aware that one of my “favorite” topics are the ugly sunglasses. Though I did not declare a winner in 2010, we do know who the repeat offenders are, don’t we? 🙂

I have also noticed an alarming number of ugly sunglasses whilst watching the Tour de France (TdF). It seems that the Ugly Sunglasses of Choice for F1 drivers and TdF cyclists is OAKLEY. I thought about it for a little while and it occurred to me that the F1 boys and TdF boys need to have a battle… for the ugliest sunglasses.

Yes that’s right. I have assembled photos for your viewing “pleasure.” Only photos from the 2011 season count. If I have missed a particularly horrendous photo, please drop me a line via twitter, email, or comment. Though I am not fond of them, I am excluding the yellow shades from “The Yellow Shades Project” because I don’t think it’s appropriate. This will be a picture heavy post… you’ve been warned. 😉

Since this is a F1 blog, let’s start with our beloved F1 boys:

Fernando has been a Repeat-Ugly-Sunglasses-Offender (RUSO) this season:

(wroom event)

(Malaysia)

(Montreal)

Although Kubica is not with us in 2011, it seems that Heikki owns the same pair of Oakley Oil Rig sunglasses:

Don’t confuse the Oil Rig with the White Gascan though:

I found the shades Liuzzi wore in Montreal to be particularly terrifying:

F1 newbie Pastor Maldonado also has a pair of ugly sunglasses, proving that he does indeed belong in F1:

Narain Karthikeyan is no longer driving for Hispania, but I did save this photo of him:

Vettel has been much better in 2011 (yay!). However, I did spot a pair of ugly sunglasses this season:

Of course, the King of F1 cannot be forgotton:

Now it’s time for the Tour de France boys. Sadly, I don’t know all of the cyclists’ names since I am not really into cycling. Please enlighten me if you happen to know:

The Schlecks seem enamored with Oakleys with clear lenses…

Frank Schleck:

Andy Schleck:

The carbon Oakleys worn by Cadel Evans is pretty ugly too:

Although I realize these green Rudy Project sunglasses aren’t Oakley, it doesn’t mean they are pretty (OK, they’re not really that bad honestly… I guess I can forgive Phillippe Gilbert…):

What makes these so bad? I duno, maybe the rainbow reflective lens. Sylvain Chavanel looks rather proud of his choice though…

Oh Tyler Farrar… you hid your cuteness behind these awful Oakley Jawbones”

World champion Thor Hushovd has an arsenal of ugly sunglasses:

Did you notice the world champion stripes on these babies? Isn’t it… a little weird?

However… the following pair of Oakleys definitely takes the cake. Oh Fabian Cancellera I am ashamed that I did not recognize you at first. Maybe these Oakleys have disguise power:

Oh. My. Eyes. They hurt. Do yours?

haha.

So what do you think? Compared to the cyclists… the F1 boys aren’t so bad, right? No matter who wins the Tour de France… they have already beaten the very best F1 drivers in one thing: The Ugly Sunglasses Battle.

Did you know that Oakley sunglasses are customizable? The lens and frames colorways can be chosen by the customer. For example, this combination is possible: top half neon green, bottom half (left side) white, bottom half (right side) black.

That is probably one reason why there are some seriously ugly Oakley sunglasses worn in the F1 and TdF world. Remember: just because you can, doesn’t mean you should!

If you are going to customize a pair of Oakley sunglasses, please use these photos as examples of what not to do. 😉

Don’t Destroy My Sweater

Liuzzi seems to be inspired by senior citizens these days. First there was the lovely floral stole he wore at testing. And now… he has draped a sweater over his shoulders like a senior:

Seniors can be chic, just take a look at the blog Advanced Style. But perhaps this time Liuzzi was inspired by Petrov instead?

It’s quite possible, do let me know what you think. 😉

Grandma Chic

While Liuzzi is waiting for the final say about driving for HRT, let’s talk about what really matters: what Liuzzi wore to testing.

hmm, it looks rather confused, doesn’t it? While I do like the toggle coat and Liuzzi’s grandmother’s scarf, the cap just doesn’t go well with what he is wearing. Did he get dressed in the dark or something? =X

Anyway, I am quite fond of toggle coats and I will share a few of my favorite ones for men:

At the risk of “one upping” Liuzzi, I think this scarf/stole is a Liuzzi x EJ collaboration:

If you like this scarf, you may purchase it at revolve clothing for about $85 USD (Distinkt Cotton/Cashmere Plaid/Floral scarf). 😉

You can pull a Liuzzi … if you want

liuzzi sweats

Liuzzi’s sweatpants aren’t for me, but maybe they’re for someone out there. A twitter follower had mentioned that Liuzzi’s sweatpants are from his own clothing line. I had not looked into it much at the time, but I have recently. Liuzzi’s clothing line is called Bonnie & Clyde, and it is available here. Check it out!

The Bonnie & Clyde website is an e-shop that sells casual mens/womens apparel and accessories. Fans of Liuzzi’s sweatpants can now purchase a pair of their own for the low low price of 65 euros (THEY ARE ON SALE!). =x

But, thepitwalk advises you to pass on the sweats 😉 …

Advice to Liuzzi from thepitwalk: I think it’s cool that you have your own clothing line, but please hire a better photographer. Some of the clothes are photographed on hangers with an unattractive background… this screams tacky ebay auction (or worse… craigslist)! nekoball is a good photographer, maybe he can help you out!!! Check out samples of nekoball’s photography on Flickr!

Why is this photo even on the website? It’s not even IN FOCUS! Liuzzi needs help!!! =x

Listen to my heart

That’s the message I got from Liuzzi’s t-shirt anyway. Graphic t-shirts can be pretty cool. Overall this one was a winner due to the attention grabbing color and simple yet effective design. Congrats Liuzzi, I just hope you weren’t wearing those baggy sweatpants again. Luckily the photo cuts off at the waist, so I will probably never know. 😛

Edit: A twitter user has kindly pointed out that Liuzzi was wearing jeans. haha. I admit I missed the detail as I really don’t care for his sweats at all. 🙂

Hulkenberg Learnt From Liuzzi

It seems that Liuzzi has become Hulkenberg’s master. What is Liuzzi teaching young Hulkenberg? … accessorizing with a lovely scarf, that’s what!

Here’s a photo of the Grand Master himself:

Liuzzi must be teaching him well… but I’m not sure if Hulkenberg should be listening? Oh dear…

Now it’s time to move on to the copious amount of material I have for Valencia. Sorry I didn’t get around to writing about Nicole and the baby she used as an accessory … :/

Liuzzi’s Pants Need to Retire

28/05/2010 2 comments

I understand the desire that drivers have for comfortable clothes. Really. But it is possible to be comfortable and stylish. Liuzzi was photographed on Thursday wearing the same pants he wore in Barcelona. He must really like them to wear them again within such a short period of time. Did anyone else notice that? The still look like faux-harem-pants to me though.

Sorry Liuzzi, these pants are NG (no good). Please get rid of them… a charity shop perhaps? =x
